Review & Description

At first glance, there didn’t appear to be anything at all remarkable about him. He was relatively short with thick brown hair and honey-colored eyes, and if asked to describe himself, more than likely he would say that he was Kevin O’Reilly, a twenty-four-year-old accountant, a typical nerd who had lived a quiet, solitary life in Omaha, Nebraska until a year ago.

He probably would not say that he was Myron, of the House of Nordin, and that he had just finished an eight-month apprenticeship in the art of sorcery with a huge gold dragon named Glendymere so that he could take his place as the Seated Sorcerer of Camden and the Master Sorcerer of Terah. Both descriptions would be true.

When Kevin began training to be a sorcerer, he was completely focused on learning to control his magic. When he found out he had an office, he realized that there was more to his role than performing magic, but he figured that once he arrived in Milhaven he would have plenty of time to watch and learn as his father’s second in command, Laryn, continued to run things. Then, as he became familiar with his duties, he’d slowly take over.

What he hadn’t counted on was his father dying within twenty-four hours of his arrival. He’d known that he’d have to take over after his father’s death, but no one had told him that it would be the very next morning. During the early morning hours following his father’s death, Laryn had cleared all of her stuff out of the office, and right after breakfast, she broke the bad news. Kevin was in charge.

If there had been enough time, he would have panicked, but there wasn’t, so he just did what had to be done and kept on doing it. He didn’t feel comfortable with any part of his role, but he’d been the Seated Sorcerer of Camden for three weeks and the Master Sorcerer of Terah for two days, and so far he’d managed to avert disaster. He just wasn’t sure how long that would last.
