A Shot in the Dark is a cozy murder mystery set in a small town.
The sheriff’s niece, a woman of seemingly impeccable character, is found murdered late Friday night outside her place of employment, apparently the victim of a bungled robbery attempt. Within the hour, the police arrest and charge a local college student. The district attorney’s office is satisfied, the sheriff and his family are grateful, and the case is closed.
When Tracy Forrester wakes up Saturday morning, all she wants to do is finish out the semester and go on vacation with her boyfriend. For the first time in a year, her time will be her own: no phone calls, no students, and best of all, no paperwork. But first she has to make it through the next three weeks.
With that thought in mind, she settles down to grade the term papers that have come in over the past week, but before she can get the first paper graded, the phone rings. The student who was arrested was one of hers, and with that one quick phone call, Tracy is dragged into the middle of his nightmare.
Before the weekend is out, Tracy is drafted to help investigate the crime for the defense. As the defense team takes a closer look at the victim, they uncover a number of motives and multiple suspects. As the investigation deepens, the town closes rank, and soon Tracy’s on the verge of losing everything she’s worked for in Langston.
